Golden Spike

Recently, following some conversations about my running activities of late, I've been introduced to a runners group of the track & field club ‘Leiden Atletiek’ by my neighbour. She's been a member since long and runs the 400 and 800 meter. Gradually falling into the world of organized running, I found myself visiting the track & field event at ‘Leiden Atletiek’ called ‘Golden Spike’ this Saturday (June 10th). The Golden Spike is one of the major track & field events in the Netherlands. It was the first time I saw an event of this sport live. The entrance to the track is in a quiet living quarter. Upon entering via the small lane leading to the track, which is hidden by the surrounding trees, I enter a small new world. For a few minutes I stood a little confused in the corner as a colourful mess of activities was unfolding on the arena and around, brightly lit by abundant sunlight. Discus, long jump and high jump were enlisted by the 3000 m peloton, while winners of past races were interviewed, potential winners of races to come were warming-up and hurdles were put in place, all at the same time. It took a while to get used to and notice what was actually going on. This event wasn't one of high-class sports only. Just as much it could be classified as a show of beautiful human beings. A collection of remarkably fit and well shaped bodies was trotting back and forth in front of my eyes, men and women alike, a joy to look at. This definitely was not a cross-section of our society, but could it be? Doing sports keeps you fit and beautiful, which in turn stimulates self-confidence. No need for botox, liposuction or diet-products, would that harm the economy?

    Mark,
